PEACE ON EARTH AND GOODWILL FOR ALL…
(…depends a lot upon who really wants it)

It’s that time of the year when most of us, Christian or otherwise, consider setting aside the frazzles and hassles of daily life as a pause for the cause, so to speak, for a bit of peace on earth and goodwill for all. Of course, that, depends a lot upon who really wants it.

In most of the civilized world that happens; but, in too many other parts of it…it doesn’t, because they just keep going at it with useless conflicts and mutual slaughter. One would think that, seeing how different the rest of the world is, they would try to follow its example instead…if only for a day…or two, but apparently not.

Such is the perverse dichotomy of human nature. Perhaps it was that perverse dichotomy which gave rise to our great religions as a means to, somehow, control and tame that aspect of our nature. Alas, it would seem that perversity has even managed to twist religious faith into a weapon rather than using it as a guidance system for righteous living.

Well, we here in our part of the world should count our blessings because we are more fortunate than others. At least we get to celebrate the occasion while indulging in our traditional pretense of abiding with the ideal of peace on earth and goodwill for all, by exchanging costly gifts with each other, sharing good feasting with friends and family, and otherwise remembering to be kind to everyone…if only for those few days.
